How WHYZE Health made AI part of its DNA from day one

When Frances Abeton couldn't get straight answers about her daughter's health condition, her frustration became the driving force for WHYZE Health.

Founded in 2021, WHYZE Health uses AI to bring order to complex patient information. Its platform turns material such as doctors’ letters, MRI reports and patient-uploaded documents into a single usable health record, supporting clinical trial matching, population health screening and real-world evidence tracking.

Enterprise Ireland has supported WHYZE Health along the way with technology advice, introductions, early-stage backing and around €200,000 in AWS infrastructure credits, helping the company build the foundations for growth in a complex, highly regulated sector. 

Doing more with less

For WHYZE Health, AI is not just part of the product. It is part of how the company works. 

With just two permanent staff and a wider fractional team, being AI-native has helped the business stay lean, move quickly and focus on higher-value work. Co-founder and CTO Phil Blackwell says, “I’m probably doing the job of two or three people because of AI.”

A recent development project, quoted at 159 days of manual work, came in at 61 days once AI was built into the process. “Instead of 20 people, you only need six or seven,” he adds.

For Blackwell, the bigger point isn’t speed for its own sake. “You can focus on what you really need to do, and not be up at ten o’clock at night checking all the admin stuff,” he says. “You can focus on the true work.”

Built on trust

 In healthcare, using AI means building trust from the start.

“We’re a 100% transparent AI company,” Blackwell says. “Even if we digitise a document, there’s always a human in the loop, a medical professional who reviews it.”

That discipline extends to security. WHYZE Health operates on a zero-trust architecture aligned to GDPR, HIPAA and ISO 27001, reflecting the demands of working with sensitive health data.

Blackwell’s advice to other businesses starting their AI journey is grounded in the same principle.

“Know what problem you’re trying to solve,” he says. “And make it transparent, so you can be auditable the whole way through. If you build AI that scans data and makes a decision, people will ask what that decision is based on. You need to be able to explain exactly how it reached that answer.”

WHYZE Health is now setting its sights on the US and the UK’s NHS, and betting that the same AI-first approach that built the company will help it get there.
