How can we help?
Documentation is a vital part of any complex large-scale construction project, and perhaps never more so than when dealing with builds for life sciences such as pharmaceuticals, where any contamination whatsoever can bring production to a grinding – and very expensive – halt.
Started more than 15 years ago by Dan McAllister and Ramy Michael, EIDA Solutions offers a robust approach to managing the thousands of documents, weld logs, test records, safety permits, vendor files and quality approvals that must be handled, and a successful project in Denmark is quickly making EIDA the go-to solution in the industry.
"From the very beginning, all documents can be executed directly within EIDA's platform, allowing everything to be tracked seamlessly throughout the process. At the point of handover, a full suite of systems and reports can be compiled at the touch of a button, saving significant time for everyone involved," says Eoin Reidy, Marketing Manager at EIDA.
Now in its second phase, the project just outside the Danish capital of Copenhagen is one of the biggest the company has taken on to date, and it has opened up new opportunities for EIDA as more and more clients and contractors become aware of the benefits of its software.
The platform’s core strength is in attention to detail, and the company positions itself as delivering niche technology and hi-touch support for a stable of large, established clients.
That means that, rather than targeting generic construction projects, the company focuses on highly regulated environments such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor facilities and data centres, where quality, compliance and traceability are critical.
The EIDA platform supports the full project lifecycle, from design and vendor documentation through construction, environmental health and safety, quality assurance, commissioning and turnover.
The platform was created to solve a problem its founders had experienced first-hand; in two decades working with such projects as an engineer, co-founder Dan discovered that document control and quality management on complex capital projects were too often slow and fragmented, and dependent on spreadsheets, PDFs and manual processes. He teamed up with Ramy to create EIDA for the purpose of enabling the smooth, efficient delivery of large, complex construction projects in life sciences and technology, through a single secure platform that digitises and connects complex construction management workflows.
In pharmaceutical facilities, for example, every weld and system record must be traceable, approved and auditable.
“If you think of pharma and the welds that need to go into the piping – if you're pumping medicine through these thousands of meters of piping, it has to be perfect. Any bit of bacteria or moisture or rust can shut down a whole site, so this makes the weld logs and all the other construction documentation hugely important,” says Eoin.
“Where we stand out is that we get down to that level of detail, as nitty-gritty as it gets. We have competitors who would maybe focus on commercial or residential construction, which is a lot simpler. While we can do that as well, where we really stand out is in our niche of these really regulated industries, particularly pharma, semi-conductors and data centres.”
EIDA addresses the complexity of building for these industries by creating a single source for live project data, ensuring that information is captured correctly as the work is done, rather than reconstructed in a box ticking exercise at the end.
The company’s delivery in Denmark illustrates the value of that approach. EIDA was brought in to help the client manage quality, compliance and project turnover across a large and complex build, coordinating multiple contractors, vendors and project teams.
During the project, the platform was used to manage more than 100,000 weld records, almost 6,000 mechanical test packs, thousands of submittals and around 15,000 safety permits. That scale demonstrates the type of data environment EIDA is built for; it is not simply a platform for storing documents, but also structures them so they can be reported on, reviewed and compiled into turnover packages when needed.
A key benefit was automated turnover. Traditionally, project teams may reach the end of construction and then spend vast amounts of hours compiling handover packs manually from Excel, Adobe files and disconnected document repositories.
EIDA does away with that sequence, enabling turnover packs that can be generated directly from the platform.
The Danish project also illustrated that successful implementation is not only about software; it’s about the relationships built along the way.
EIDA’s team spent time on site, working closely with the client, contractor and subcontractor teams to embed new digital processes, helping to streamline how the system was deployed and on-boarding those who hadn’t used it before.
“The size of these projects means it never really ends; you don't really have an onboarding period and, when that’s done, everyone's ready to rock. You have to stay really close to the project, constantly checking in, constantly making sure that things are okay,” says Ben Carpenter, Head of US Operations at EIDA.
“We travelled to Denmark throughout the project we were on site, and that was really important. EIDA is not just software; in many ways, it changes a lot of the processes for clients and contractors, so we’re there to guide them in that,” says Ben.
Enterprise Ireland played a key role in helping EIDA get established in the Nordic region, and this in turn has opened up opportunities abroad, particularly in the U.S., as Scandinavian and other partners get involved in construction projects there.
“Enterprise Ireland has been a really valuable partner as we’ve grown internationally – they know the right people and have always been there to support us as we’ve moved into new markets. That kind of backing makes a real difference,” says Ben.
With EIDA now firmly established in the market, the company is in a position to share knowledge and contacts with other companies looking to break into the Nordic region through Enterprise Ireland.
“We have always had support from Enterprise Ireland. They know all the right people, and there's obviously a lot of Irish companies active in the region,” Eoin says.
“We’ve learned a lot, so we can help them out as well. We obviously know a lot of people from our years operating here, and we’ve made a lot of connections. You help each other out, you make introductions, and it’s to everyone's benefit, really.”
EIDA’s goal is continued growth, thanks in no small part to a proven track record, strong relationships built in the Nordic region and the support of Enterprise Ireland.
“We have projects ongoing in Europe, Asia and North America, and we have had great help from Enterprise Ireland everywhere we go,” says Eoin.
“Our platform is very module-based, so we can get involved very quickly in very complex projects anywhere in the world and make a difference, whether they be pharma, semi-conductors or data centres.”
